If someone had told us a few years ago that we\u2019d one day be strolling through Brig with enthusiasm, rediscovering Bellinzona, or recommending Biel for a day trip, we probably wouldn\u2019t have believed it.<\/p>\n\n

Because let’s be honest: How often do these places make it to the top of the list when it comes to a weekend or day trip with friends or family?<\/p>\n\n

But that’s exactly what makes Switzerland so exciting. Scattered among well-known and popular destinations such as Zurich, Lucerne, and Zermatt are countless places that rarely appear on the major lists of the most popular tourist destinations\u2014and have retained their unique character precisely because of that.<\/p>\n\n

As we develop and maintain our trails, we regularly discover places that stay with us for a long time. Not because they’re bigger or more spectacular than others, but because they have an atmosphere, a history, or a character we would never have expected to find there. Without Foxtrail, we probably would never have gotten to know some of these places so well on our own.<\/p>\n\n

Fall is the perfect time to explore regions like these. The temperatures are becoming more pleasant, the landscape is slowly changing color, and many places seem quieter than during the high season. Anyone who regularly develops and maintains new trails sees Switzerland in a whole new light. Suddenly, it’s not just the well-known sights in the most popular cities that are interesting. The places in between will also be exciting. Smaller, more manageable cities. Neighborhoods that don’t appear in any travel guide. Places you’d normally just walk right past. A sculpture that you suddenly find yourself looking at more closely. A special regional custom.<\/p>\n\n

Over the years, this has allowed us to get to know regions that we probably would never have explored so thoroughly without Foxtrail. Some of them are now among our absolute favorites.<\/p>\n\n

Over the years, we’ve gotten to know (or rediscovered) many regions of Switzerland through trail development. Time and again, we come across places that may not be on everyone\u2019s bucket list, but that have left a lasting impression on us with their character, history, or atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n

Liestal<\/h3>\n\n

For many people, Liestal is primarily a train station on the way to Basel. Yet the capital of the canton of Basel-Landschaft has much more to offer than just a train station. The historic old town is perfect for a leisurely stroll, and anyone who takes an interest in the region will sooner or later come across the legendary Chienb\u00e4se parade. When the burning brooms are carried through the \u201cStedtli,\u201d Liestal looks almost like something out of a fantasy movie for one evening.<\/p>\n\n

Bellinzona<\/h3>\n\n

Many visitors to Ticino continue on directly to Lugano or Ascona. Bellinzona is often just a stopover. It’s actually a shame. The city’s three castles are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and give Bellinzona an atmosphere that is rarely found in Switzerland. When you stroll through the old town, there are places where you feel more like you’re in northern Italy than in Switzerland. And by train, you can reach Bellinzona in just over 1.5 hours from Zurich.<\/p>\n\n

Aarau<\/h3>\n\n

To this day, the canton of Aargau is often associated with the famous R\u00fcebli. Aarau, however, proves that the canton has much more to offer than just carrots. The Old Town surprises visitors with over 70 artistically painted gables, the town stream winding through the alleys, local shops, and a history that can be discovered around every corner. Anyone who takes a careful stroll through Aarau will quickly realize that this city is often underestimated.<\/p>\n\n

Brig<\/h3>\n\n

When people head toward the Valais, Zermatt and the Matterhorn are usually the first things that come to mind. Brig is often overlooked in this context. The city offers an impressive blend of a historic city center, alpine scenery, and the authentic Valais way of life. It is precisely the quieter corners around the historic center and the monasteries that reveal a side of Valais that many visitors never get to see.<\/p>\n\n

Biel<\/h3>\n\n

When people think of Swiss cities, they often mention Zurich, Lucerne, or Bern. Biel appears much less frequently on these lists. The city offers many of the elements that make for a great day trip: Lake Biel, the wine region, a charming old town, and a vibrant cultural scene. The Lakeside Festival, one of the region’s best-known music events, also takes place here. Biel’s bilingualism also gives it a character that is rarely found in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n

Klosters<\/h3>\n\n

Many people automatically associate Klosters with winter sports. However, it is especially outside the peak season that the region reveals its unique charm. The combination of mountain scenery, tranquility, and wide-open spaces makes Klosters a place where you can really unwind.
