Fun facts about Flims that you didn’t know yet!

1st longest descent in the Surselva

Thelongest descent in the area starts at the top station of the La Siala chairlift. On wide carving pistes, occasionally also on narrower drag trails, it goes downhill from here – first to Grauberg, then to Startgels and finally to the edge of the village of Flims.

2nd UNESCO World Heritage Site

Flims is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Tectonic Arena Sardona”. The Tectonic Arena Sardona is a geologically unique area that shows the formation of the Alps.

3rd Senda Romontscha

The 6km-long language trail explains how the Romansh language came into being in 15v. Chr. after the arrival of the Romans, when the Romansh language area reached its greatest extent and why it then became smaller.

4th village of architecture

Flims is famous for its architecture, especially for the unique works of the architect Rudolf Olgiati. He was a leading representative of the New Objectivity movement and mainly built detached houses in Graubünden, as well as restoring old patrician and farmhouses. He successfully combined international architectural trends with traditional Swiss architectural styles.

5. thanks to a natural disaster

Flims owes its unique, terraced location to a natural disaster. Around 9,000 years ago, at the end of the Ice Age, the prehistoric Flims landslide occurred. The landslide tore limestone rock the size of around 13 Matterhörner from the Flimserstein and filled in the Rhine.

6. the white yellow house

Completely renovated in 1998 by Mr Valerio Olgiati at a cost of CHF 1.4 million, the once inconspicuous yellow house in the village centre now shines in white . Only the name has been retained.

7th Lake Cauma

Lake C auma,the pearl of the Alps, lies in the uninhabited southern part of Flims and never fails to impress every guest.

8th Oldest existing via ferrata in Switzerland

With the “Pinut” via f errata, Flims has the oldest via ferrata still in existence in Switzerland. It was first mentioned in writing back in 1739.

9th alpine descent Flimserstein

Every year in September, after the cows have spent the summer on the lush pastures, the traditional Fl imserstein Alpine cattle drive takes place. Around 200 cows and calves gather in the Bargis high valley against a breathtaking backdrop.

10th Fluvius

The name Flims is originally derived from the Latin word “Fluvius” for river and refers to the spring streams that once flowed through the village. This is why the German “Flims” also has a plural s.

Flims is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It is located in the Surselva district and has around 2,900 inhabitants. Flims is a popular holiday resort and is known for its beautiful landscape, many leisure activities and numerous hotels and restaurants.

Location and geography

Flims lies at an altitude of 1,081 metres above sea level at the foot of the Flimserstein. The municipality is located in the upper Vorderrheintal valley and is surrounded by mountains. Flims is part of the Sardona Tectonic Arena, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History of Flims

Flims was first mentioned in a document in 765. In the 19th century, Flims developed into a popular health resort.
